Essential oils are naturally obtained by distillation from herbs, fruits and other plants. Essential oils can help you relax, clear your skin and even aid in digestion. Their benefits go well beyond a pleasant smell. There are some general tips for using essential oils that apply regardless of the type.

Tip 1: Look for quality. Buy your essential oils from a reputable source.

Tip 2: Most essential oils must never be ingested or applied directly to your skin. Essential oils need to be diluted with water or a “carrier oil” like jojoba, coconut or almond.

Tip 3: Always check with a doctor before using essential oils for any medicinal purpose.

Here are three essential oils favorites that have been found to encourage healthy living:

Lavender: Lavender is the most well known and versatile of the essential oils, and for good reason. Lavender is said to be the oil of honest communication and expression. Try adding a few drops to the bath, or on your pillow to help you unwind and fall asleep. Pure lavender oil is so universal in its properties and uses that when in doubt, choose lavender.

Grapefruit: This essential oil increases energy levels with its uplifting citrus scent. This oil can be diffused or inhaled directly. For adults, this is an oil that can applied without dilution. Grapefruit oil has been reported to give you more energy and stamina and has been helpful with those suffering from fatigue or jet lag. It's also a natural antiseptic so you can add it to your homemade household cleansers.

Eucalyptus: Eucalyptus oil can be used to relieve sore muscles and help clear sinuses. Adding a few drops to a basin of steaming water to inhale, or a vaporizer, can help loosen up a congested chest. Never ingest it or use it on your skin undiluted, as it can be irritating.

Once you become familiar with these basic essential oils, branching out and creating your own combinations is simple and fun!
